The CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) is the revenue service of the Government of Canada who collects taxes, administers taxes, and delivers tax benefits and tax programs for the federal government. Their application process is often complex and hard for homeowners and investment property owners to navigate themselves which is why we step in and take over for them as we have over 15 years of experience navigating through the waters of the CRA.

What Is A Notice of Assessment?

If you receive a Notice of Assessment after applying for a GST/HST Rebate denying your request, it’s important to remember not to panic. We may still be able to help you and you are completely entitled to filing a Notice of Objection within 90 days. But first of all, are you even aware of what a Notice of Assessment is? Let’s go over the basics first.

When you send in your taxes every year (whether it’s on your own or with the help of a tax professional) you’ll receive a Notice of Assessment outlining what you’re expected to get back in return from the government, or what you owe. Differences in numbers between what you came up with and what they came up with on the assessment will be reviewed on the Notice of Assessment. In the case of income taxes, the assessment will typically arrive two weeks after filing.

However, mistakes can happen when you apply for the GST/HST Rebate and you may notice changes on your assessment. This could occur for a few different reasons including an overlooked mistake, information is missing, information is outdated, pages are missing, you didn’t meet the deadline to apply for the GST/HST Tax Rebate, and more. You must always make sure the information you’re sending in is accurate and precise which is why we also encourage clients to keep every receipt outlining the HST they’ve paid towards their new property renovations. As mentioned above, if you disagree with the information on your assessment, you have 90 days to file a Notice of Objection.
