ABOUT

We do one thing.

Sproule + Associates works on GST/HST housing rebates. Not tax generally, not accounting generally — the Excise Tax Act, and the rebates that sit inside it.

2,500 claims filed. Over $65 million recovered.

Michael Sproule, FEA, C.Dir

Michael has spent more than 15 years dealing with the Canada Revenue Agency on GST/HST matters specifically. Not as one service line inside a general practice — as the practice.

That specialisation is the whole proposition. In a year when the Excise Tax Act was amended twice, when Ontario introduced a temporary rebate that changes the maximum by more than $100,000, and when the CRA’s own systems took months to catch up with the legislation, the difference between someone who reads this material weekly and someone who encounters it occasionally is measured in five figures per file.

What 2,500 claims teaches you

Volume matters in this work for an unglamorous reason: you learn what gets reviewed.

A rebate application is a document assembled from other documents, and the CRA assesses it against criteria that aren’t written on the form. After a few thousand files you know which combinations of facts attract a second look, which supporting evidence closes a question before it’s asked, and which arguments an appeals officer actually responds to.

That’s not knowledge you can acquire from the guide. It comes from having seen the outcomes.

How we work

A flat fee, never a percentage. Most firms in this business take a cut of what you recover. When Ontario’s ceiling was $24,000 that was a reasonable arrangement. At $130,000 it means the fee rises every time the government raises the limit, for work that hasn’t changed. We quote a flat professional fee before you commit, and charge it when we file.

The assessment is free. If we don’t think you have a claim, we say so at that stage, and it costs you nothing to have asked. We say it fairly often — substantial renovation in particular.

We fight denials. Filing applications is something many firms offer. Arguing a denial through the CRA’s appeals process is not. If we filed your claim, the objection is part of the same engagement. We’ll also take on objections for claims we didn’t file.

We tell you when the answer is no. Not every enquiry becomes a claim, and we’d rather say so on the first call than eighteen months into a file.
